ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst police responded this week to two residents who said they were victims of Bitcoin scams. Here is information from the reports:
- A resident in the 100 block of East Grand Avenue told police Monday that someone claiming to be a bank employee gained access to her account and advised her to withdraw money to prevent internal bank fraud. The victim complied and transferred the money to a Bitcoin account. An investigation is pending.
- A resident in the 400 block of West Butterfield Road told police Monday that he received a computer prompt to call Microsoft for an error. He called a number that he thought was for Microsoft and was told that his bank account was compromised. To avoid further loss, he was told to send money to a Bitcoin account and that his other money would be returned. The 400 block of West Butterfield includes the Roosevelt at Salt Creek senior living community.
