PRINCE ALBERT – Prince Albert Police Service have multiple fraud investigations that would be similar to the emergency/grandparent scam.
Police say the criminal will typically target seniors pretending to be a family member in distress – identifying themselves as police, justice officials or lawyers, claiming that a loved one or grandchild is in trouble or in need of money immediately. Victims are told that there is an order that doesn’t allow them to share this with anyone.
Protect yourself. Calls demanding immediate payment for bail or fines or to avoid going to jail is suspicious. Courts or police will never call you to send money.
Calls from unknown persons claiming to be a lawyer, police or family member in an emergency situation – demanding funds is extremely suspicious and not the method that those professions use. Hang up immediately and contact the police and/or that family member.
Calls requesting cash and sending couriers for pick-up or demand the victim to send cash by courier services or via crypto currency is suspicious. Never send cash, Crypto currency or any funds to an unknown person, unverified addresses or bank accounts.
If you believe you have been scammed, contact your local police 306 953 4222 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 / antifraudcentre.ca.
