Puma, the well-known international sports apparel company, is further expanding its involvement in Web3 technology by partnering with NBA player LaMelo Ball and the NFT project Gutter Cat Gang for a collaboration. This collaboration introduces a unique sneaker release named “GutterMelo MB.03.”

The limited-edition sneakers will be initially available as NFT collectibles on the OpenSea marketplace for $175 from June 29. Later, during one month from July 18 to August 20, the NFT holders will have the opportunity to redeem their digital collectible for the physical sneakers
The website states the sneaker collection signifies a “new era for hoops apparel and fashion.” Ball has created it as part of his fashion collaboration with Puma under the brand MB. Additionally, each buyer who purchases the NFT sneakers will receive a physical pair that they can showcase in the real world.
The website further explains that this collaboration goes beyond conventional boundaries by empowering basketball players to express their styles on the court and online. Moreover, it aims to increase awareness about web3 technology and digital collectibles among a wider audience.
Enthusiastic buyers can now sign up on the allowlist platform called Premint to express their interest in purchasing. However, the website has already indicated an excess of demand, and not all buyers will have the opportunity to acquire sneakers from the collection.
Collectors who join the early access allowlist can purchase the GutterMelo MB.03 sneakers for $175, whereas those on the early access waitlist will pay $195. The price will subsequently increase to $215 for the general public sale.

NFT-driven Releases
Ball, a talented and rising NBA player selected as the third overall draft pick in 2020 and currently plays point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, signed a lucrative endorsement agreement with Puma in 2020, reportedly valued at $100 million, spanning multiple years. The MB.03 sneaker represents the third installment in his collaborative sneaker line with Puma, and there are plans to unveil additional editions later in the year.
Introduced in June 2021, Gutter Cat Gang is an NFT profile picture (PFP) project comprising 3,000 cat-themed avatars. The Puma sneaker features a unique design with a vibrant heat map-like effect. It also incorporates an image representing the Gutter Cat Gang and an inscription of “1-of-1” on the tongue. Additionally, the heel prominently displays the names of the collaborators.
Moreover, LeBron James, who has achieved the remarkable feat of being selected as an all-star in each of his 19 NBA seasons so far, has also made his foray into the world of NFTs. In May, observers spotted him wearing exclusive RTFKT sneakers, and the same company also gifted him his own CloneX avatar. It is worth noting that Nike acquired RTFKT, a digital sneaker startup, in December 2021.

The practice of exchanging digital NFTs for merchandise gained significant popularity thanks to RTFKT. Additionally, holders of the CloneX avatar have been allowed to “forge” physical items that embody the clothing characteristics of their digital assets.
It is worth noting that as NFTs gain prominence, the realm of fashion has discovered a new avenue within this digital landscape. Mainly, streetwear and sneakers have emerged as frontrunners in the digital fashion space. Nike, for instance, made a significant announcement in April by introducing its inaugural digital sneaker collection on its Web3 platform, Swoosh.

Despite delays attributed to technology challenges, the collection surpassed $1 million in sales. Similarly, in April, Adidas launched its initial series of NFTs linked to its Web3 ecosystem named Into the Metaverse.
Nike maintains its dominant position in the basketball sneaker market, as it remains the preferred choice for most NBA players. During the 2023 season, approximately 67 percent of NBA players opted to wear Nike shoes. This figure rises to nearly 75 percent when including Nike’s subsidiary brand, Jordan Brand.
