AI agent tokens plunged more than 9% as sector leaders Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL), Zerebro (ZEREBRO), ai16z (AI16Z) and Aixbt By Virtuals (AIXBT) all recorded steep losses.
VIRTUAL dropped over 16% in the past 24 hours, while ZEREBRO fell more than 23%, AI16Z retraced over 16%, and AIXBT plunged over 25%.
AI Agent Tokens Still Up On The Weekly Time Frame
Despite the recent correction, the majority of AI agent tokens are still in the green on the weekly time frame. Following its steep price drop, VIRTUAL is still up more than 36% over the past 7 days. Similarly, the weekly performances for ZEREBRO and AIXBT are over 82% and 53% in the green, respectively.
AI16Z leads the top 10 largest AI agent tokens in weekly performance after posting an impressive 124% gain over the past 7 days. As a result, the crypto trades at $1.94 as of 3:11 a.m. EST after it plunged more than 21% from the all-time high of $2.48 that it set yesterday.
Meme Coins Predicted To Lose Market Share Throughout 2025
In a Jan. 1 X post, Dragonfly Capital managing partner Haseeb Qureshi predicted that meme coins, which were the best performing crypto assets in 2024, will continue to lose market share to AI agent tokens this year.

“The ‘AI agent’ craze will continue probably throughout 2025,” he wrote in the post, before adding that “meme coins will continue to lose market share to ‘AI agent’ coins.”
He warned, however, that the hype around AI agent coins “will eventually die off” heading into 2026, warning that these tokens are “not the long-term disruption to watch out for from AI.”
“The chatbots will become so ubiquitous that people will get turned off by them,” he added.
