Police warn the public to be vigilant after a London-area resident lost $35,000 in a scam.
An Adelaide Metcalfe resident contacted police on Monday to report being defrauded after received a pop-up notification from Microsoft, saying an update needed to be installed on their computer and directing them to call a number provided, Middlesex OPP said.
The victim called the number and paid for a fake firewall. The next day, another person claiming to be a Microsoft employee contacted the victim and gained remote access to their computer and banking information, police said.

The victim was told that a deposit had mistakenly been made into their account and they needed to pay it back in Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency trading at more than $40,000 as of Tuesday.
The victim transferred around $35,000 worth of Bitcoin to the unknown fraudsters, police said. No arrests have been made in the case.
