For the past few years the cryptocurrency traders have alleged that they are harassed by police officials as they demand bribes from them so that they can clear their names from online fraud cases even if they are not involved in it.
When the cryptocurrency traders refuse to pay the bribe then their bank accounts are frozen and in certain instances, the crypto currency traders are arrested and put behind bars.
In this recent incident wherein corruption by police has been exposed, the Kerala police have arrested four police officials, including an inspector for allegedly demanding bribes from an accused of crypto currency case.
It has been reported that Kochi’s Kalamassery Police took custody of Inspector Shivaprakash, constables Shivanna, Vijaya Kumar, and Sandesh of Bengaluru’s Whitefield CEN Crime Police Station.
According to the reports in the media, Kochi Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order and Traffic) S Sasidharan stated that “Kalamassery police found Rs 3.95 lakh in their car and on being asked the officers failed to explain the source of money. Hence they were brought to the police station.
Sections under which Karnataka police officers are charged
S Sasidharan informed the media persons that the 4 Karnataka police officers have been charged with extortion (Section 384 of the IPC) and threatening to extort money (Section 385 of the IPC).
Karnataka Police exposed
Lawyer Suchithra M S stated that the Karnataka Police picked up Akhil Antony and Nikhil on August 1 and were taken to Palluruthy Police Station and after that they were taken into custody. The lawyer further said that their names were not found in the original FIR.
Soon Akhil and Nikhil’s families received a phone call from the Karnataka Police and they asked them to give them Rs 10 lakh. In the meantime, missing person’s complaint was filed. At the same time Nikhil’s father arranged for Rs 3 lakh and gave it to the Karnataka Police officials and Akhil was forced to withdraw Rs 1 lakh from the ATM.
During this time, DCP Sasidharan was working on a missing persons complaint and while listening to the phone conversation, he found the truth in the complaint.
The DCP swung into action and immediately asked Kalamassery SHO Vipin Das to intercept the vehicle of the Karnataka police team. The officers found Nikhil at Nedumbassery in the vehicle along with 4 Karnataka police officials. During the search they found Rs 3.95 lakh.
