GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Campbell County man is out $40,000 after reportedly falling victim to a cryptocurrency romance scam, according to Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds.
The man, 47, reported the incident to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office on June 13 at 1:08 p.m. and said that he had been convinced to purchase cryptocurrency and send it to a website by his online romantic partner, Reynolds said.
The man said he had been involved with his online romantic partner since they began communicating in March 2023, according to Reynolds, who said the man realized after sending the cryptocurrency that he did not have the ability to withdraw it.
Reynolds said the incident appears to be a crypto-romance scam, which involves a scammer cultivating romantic interest from their victims using online dating apps or any service that allows online messaging.
Once romantic interest is established, the scammers convince the victim to use a specific website to send their cryptocurrency to and don’t allow the victim to access it.
As of June 15, the 47-year-old man is out $40,000, Reynolds said, adding that the case remains an active investigation and will likely be turned over to the FBI.
