CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCCU) — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning about phishing email scams coming from PayPal and MetaMask. The scam emails and texts state there is an issue with your crypto wallet or with your billing and tell you to call a number immediately to fix the problem
The FTC said most of these unexpected emails saying to act quickly, click a link, or call a number are phishing scams. If you call the number or click the link, scammers will steal your financial and personal information, which could lead to identity theft.
Law enforcement says it’s critical to make sure you are dealing with a reputable company, not a scammer.
“I would encourage people to look up business numbers, and to see if it’s from a legitimate organization, and you could always hang up and call back,” explained Lt. Mike Cerbantes, Urbana Police Department criminal investigations division. “Some of these scammers will encourage people not to hang up the phone and actually threaten them, but I would encourage people to hang on, look up the number through Google or some other reputable way.”
Lieutenant Cervantes also said you should always be cautious about what personal information you share online or with strangers. If you are the victim of a scam, contact your local police department and report the scam to the FTC.
