Oceanside RCMP say a resident reported losing nearly $20,000 after responding a social media advertising sales pitch selling cryptocurrency on May 15.
One day later, another resident reported losing $1,500 responding to a social media message board about a $100,000 government grant program requiring transactions fees on May 16.
The incidents were among 270 complaints received by the Oceanside RCMP the week of May 13 to May 19.
On May 13, a business break-and-enter was reported with items stolen in the 100 block of Middleton Avenue in Parksville. A female subject was arrested. The same day, a hole was reported drilled into a vehicle’s fuel tank and fuel listed as missing in the 200 block of Higson Crescent in Qualicum Beach. Garden plants were also reported vandalized in the 300 block of Banks Avenue East in Parksville.
A day later, a male nighttime car prowler was reported in the 500 block of Stanford Avenue in Parksville, on May 14. The next day, an exterior business security camera was reported vandalized in the 700 block of Memorial Avenue in Qualicum Beach. Also on May 15 in Errington, a vehicle was reported vandalized with a window broken in the 1000 block of Allsbrook Road and a firework was reported shot at a stationary vehicle in the 200 block of Village Way in Qualicum Beach.
On May 16, a section of guard rails were reported vandalized in the area of Highway 19 and Cochrane Road in Qualicum Beach. The same day, a vehicle was reported vandalized with a window broken in the 100 block of Finholm Street North in Parksville, on May 16 and a catalytic converter was reported stolen from a vehicle in the area of Chatsworth Road and Alberni Highway in Qualicum Beach.
On May 18, a nighttime female prowler was reported in the 4500 block of Callow Road, Bowser. The next day, a number of vehicles were reported vandalized with thrown eggs in the area of Highway 19 at Exit 60. A catalytic converter was also reported stolen from a vehicle in the 600 block of Island Highway East in Parksville. A male subject was apprehended on-site and arrested.
