The report added that the victim invested the money through a mobile app and purchased cryptocurrency worth USD 39,596. However, in May 2022, the WhatsApp group suddenly disbanded, and the victim was unable to contact the group administrator. Realizing that he had been cheated, the victim filed a complaint with the cyber police. A thorough investigation was launched, and the police discovered OKX, a cryptocurrency exchange registered in Seychelles, during the course of their inquiries.
The court was informed that the victim’s money was in the wallet of the Chinese national, and the numbers used to contact the victim originated from Hong Kong. After reviewing the submissions made by the cyber cell, the court ordered the return of the Rs 36 lakh, which was in the form of cryptocurrency, to the complainant. Following the court order, the amount was successfully recovered and returned to the victim a few days ago.
