Police in White Settlement have presented a woman who lost thousands of dollars to cryptocurrency scammers with a check covering all the money she lost.
Police say the victim, who is 84 years old, was contacted by scammers earlier this month. They claimed they worked for her bank and that she needed to send them $40,000 in Bitcoin – or she would be arrested. The woman went to a Bitcoin ATM at a convenience store and began to deposit thousands of dollars. Another customer at the store noticed the transaction and notified store employees and the White Settlement Police Department
The responding officer, Sgt. James Stewart, convinced the woman to stop the transaction – but she had already deposited $23,900.
White Settlement Police say they have recovered the $23,900 that had been deposited into the ATM. Lt. Denise Callahan of the White Settlement Police Department worked with Bitcoin’s law enforcement liaison on the case.
Police presented the victim with a check for $23,900. Stewart was there for the ceremony and even accompanied the woman to her bank to redeposit the money back into her account safely.
